Description

A classic apple pie recipe that evokes warmth and nostalgia, featuring a buttery crust and tender, spiced apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Perfect Pie Crust Recipe
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 8 cups thinly sliced apples (peeled and cored)
  • 2/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by setting aside a 9-inch pie plate and preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add in the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Stir well and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until the apples soften. Set aside the mixture to cool slightly.
  3. Divide your prepared perfect pie dough into half. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc to about 1/8-inch thick, ensuring it’s slightly larger than your pie plate. Carefully transfer it into the pie plate, gently pressing it into the bottom.
  4. Combine the egg and water in a small bowl and whisk together to create an egg wash. Set aside.
  5. Transfer your cooled apple filling into the prepared crust, spreading it evenly. Roll out the second disc of dough to cover the top of the pie. Alternatively, slice the rolled dough into strips and braid them over the filling for a beautiful design. If using a solid top, cut vents in the crust for steam to escape.
  6. Trim any excess dough hanging over the edges, then crimp the edges to seal. Brush the top generously with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce the heat to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling bubbles through the vents, around 40 minutes. If the crust begins to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
  8. Allow the pie to cool before serving to help the filling set and make slicing easier.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat slices in the oven for the best taste.
