Description

A creamy, cheesy delight that layers ground beef with tender sliced potatoes, perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or a cozy family gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean mix, like 85/15)
  • 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
  • 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Garlic powder (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190 °C).
  2. Place the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart and cooking for 7 to 10 minutes or until fully browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Return the skillet to medium heat and toss in the chopped onion. Sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until it’s translucent.
  4. Season the beef-onion mix with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, stirring for another minute.
  5. While the beef mixture is cooking, peel and slice the potatoes thinly.
  6. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, lay half of the potato slices in a single layer, season with salt and pepper.
  7. Spread the beef-onion mix evenly over the potatoes.
  8. Top the meat layer with the remaining potato slices.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and melted butter, then pour that mixture over the top.
  10. Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly over the casserole.
  11. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  12. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.
  13. Check for doneness by poking a fork into the potatoes; they should be tender.
  14. Once baked, let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For make-ahead, prepare the casserole the night before and refrigerate. Ensure to add a few extra minutes to baking time.
