Description
A creamy, cheesy delight that layers ground beef with tender sliced potatoes, perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or a cozy family gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (lean mix, like 85/15)
- 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon gold, peeled and sliced thin)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter (melted)
- Salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Garlic powder (to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190 °C).
- Place the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart and cooking for 7 to 10 minutes or until fully browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Return the skillet to medium heat and toss in the chopped onion. Sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until it’s translucent.
- Season the beef-onion mix with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, stirring for another minute.
- While the beef mixture is cooking, peel and slice the potatoes thinly.
- In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, lay half of the potato slices in a single layer, season with salt and pepper.
- Spread the beef-onion mix evenly over the potatoes.
- Top the meat layer with the remaining potato slices.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and melted butter, then pour that mixture over the top.
- Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly over the casserole.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- After 45 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.
- Check for doneness by poking a fork into the potatoes; they should be tender.
- Once baked, let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For make-ahead, prepare the casserole the night before and refrigerate. Ensure to add a few extra minutes to baking time.
